Record numbers deported

As part of the new border initiatives of expedient deportations or exclusions, INS has reported that 112,000 persons were deported or removed from the U.S. in fiscal 1996. Most had aggravated felony charges. The remainder fell under the new expedited process of deportation.

INS replaces visa numbers

So as to justify the new Central American immigrant visa awards, Congress has reduced the 'other worker' category to offset 5,000 visa numbers to be reallocated. The reallocation will only cause a greater delay for persons who are not deemed `skilled` but for whom labor certifications have been approved.

Visa waivers extended

Over a dozen European countries and some south American countries benefit from visa waivers, i.e. the traveller only needs to show the passport of his country to gain access to the U.S. for durations of 90 days. The program was highly successful with a fraud rate of less than 1% and, as such, Congress has extended it for an additional six months.

Congressional negotiations should conclude prior to the extension.
